Localizing app store screenshots without losing quality

A workflow for translating screenshot copy, adapting layouts and keeping App Store and Google Play visuals consistent.

Localization is layout work

Translated screenshot copy changes line length, rhythm and emphasis. Treat localization as a design pass, not a find-and-replace task.

Workflow

  • Freeze the original message hierarchy.
  • Translate meaning, not each word.
  • Refit headlines per language.
  • Review screenshots at thumbnail size.
  • Export each locale from the same template system.

How the stores handle missing assets

On Google Play, localized text and localized graphics are separate. If you translate the listing text but do not upload graphics for that language, Google displays the assets from the default language. Google may offer users an automated translation of listing text, but that does not replace localized screenshots.

In App Store Connect, screenshots can be uploaded per language and device size through Media Manager. Apple can scale a highest-resolution screenshot down when the interface is identical across sizes. If a localized app preview is missing, Apple may use the next best available language, so audit fallback behavior as part of release QA.

Decide what must stay fixed

Brand color, device position and screenshot order can usually stay consistent. Headline line breaks, supporting copy and UI crop often need locale-specific adjustment.

Separate language from market targeting

Language localization and audience targeting solve different problems. Google Play custom store listings can target countries, URLs, search keywords or user states. Apple's custom product pages can support distinct campaign messages. Use localization for language and cultural fit; use targeted pages when the value proposition itself changes by segment.

Review checklist

  • Does the first screenshot read naturally?
  • Is the localized claim still true?
  • Are app UI and marketing text in the same language?
  • Does every frame still fit the original visual system?
